Session Title: Liability Concerns for Assistive Technology Reutilization Programs

Session Description:

This presentation will address the liability challenges facing AT Reutilization programs, with an emphasis on the Food and Drug Administration and the applicability of these regulations to AT Reutilization Programs. Additionally, we will share and discuss the Pass It On Center's checklist for identifying possible liability concerns for AT Reutilization Programs, and steps for developing policies and procedures to mitigate liability risks.

Risk Management is an essential part of program quality and sustainability.

2. Second Key Learning Point 

There are specific steps AT reuse programs can take to mitigate risk.

3. Third Key Learning Point 

The liability checklist presented will enable programs to assess how well they are managing risk.

Presentation Outline:

A. Statement of the problem or issue: AT Reutilization programs face numerous liability challenges as they reutilize assistive technology to improve access for individuals with disabilities.

B. Description of activity, project, or solution: The Pass It On Center is developing resources that will assist AT reuse programs in accessing and improving their policies, procedures, and practices across a range of essential functions.

C. Outcomes: The Pass It On Center has developed a checklist to help AT Reutilization programs assess liability challenges and establish policies and procedures to limit the risk of liability.

D. Importance or relevance to other organizations. AT Reutilization programs may use the checklist to develop policies and procedures to limit the risk of liability for programs engaged in AT reutilization.
